Thus the disease probably came first to the Aleutian Islands, the southern coast, and the southeastern panhandle with the ex¬ plorers and fur traders some time in the latter part of the 18th century. The search for gold and whales late in the 19th century provided additional opportunities for the introduction of tuberculosis into the interior and along the northwest coast. When the disease arrived in the delta of the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers is not known, but it seems likely that the epi¬ demic peak came later in this area than else¬ where in Alaska. Elevation of CD56brightCD16- Lymphocytes in MDR Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Background: Protective immune responses induced in the majority of people infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis enable them to control TB infection. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate CD56 and CD16 positive peripheral blood mononu-clear cells (PBMCs) and leukocyte subsets from multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuber-culosis (MDR-TB), and compare them with nonresistant (NR) TB p...

Year of Birth Effects in the Historical Decline of Tuberculosis Mortality: A Reconsideration

Birth cohort patterns in mortality are often used to infer long-lasting impacts of early life conditions. Macrophage Immune Response Suppression by Recombinant Mycobacterium tuberculosis Antigens, the ESAT-6, CFP-10, and ESAT-6/CFP-10 Fusion Proteins

Background: Macrophage immune responses are affected by the secretory proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). This study aimed to examine the immune responses of macrophages to Mtb secretory antigens, namely ESAT-6, CFP-10, and ESAT-6/CFP-10.Methods: THP-1 cells (a human monocytic cell line) were cultured and differentiated to macrophages by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate. The cytotoxici...
